Reid and Cornelie
Two people who have found a place in my heart.
They live in an old lighthouse, grow and make a lot of what they daily need themselves. This seemed very interesting to me, especially since I have noticed I don’t always like modern times.
I heard about them, living in and old lighthouse almost completely self-sustainable, making their own food, utilities and clothing. lt really got my attention because
I notice about myself that navigating through these modern times with so much technology isn't always as easy.
Nobody knows anything anymore about old trades and skills. I wanted to learn more about the people who still do, who think differently than our modern aged minds, and who would inspire me. One day I just grabbed my car and drove to their lighthouse. l parked my car a few kilometers away and walked the last few. l came through the Frisian landscape filled with sheep and birds and nature all around.
I knocked on the door and came face to face with this bearded old sailor with an intimidating appearance and a really sweet and welcoming woman. l asked if I could photograph them. Since then I visit them and get to know these two special people. I feel privileged to hear their story. This is the first part of that story
and our friendship.
(18-03-2016)
I was introduced to all animals, including the spiders.
(10-04-2016)
Picking herbs and vegetables from the garden with Cornelie, making our own dinner.
(07-05-2016)
Saving newborn chicks from their nest in the attic, almost plummeting to the ground.
(22-05-2016)
Making the barn winter-ready with fish-oil, and eating pesto made from watercress out of the creek.
(12-10-2016)
Searching for the toilet with a flashlight, and getting woken up by the sound of goats and roosters.
(13-10-2016)
Parking the car in an endangered bird zone, getting phoned by the police because they found your "stolen" car.
